Anemia

Anemia, also spelled anaemia, is derived from the Greek word anaimia, which means lack of blood. Anemia refers to a decrease in number of red blood cells (RBCs) or insufficient quantity of hemoglobin in the blood. In men, the normal level of hemoglobin is 13.8 to 18.0 g/dL while in healthy women, it can range from 12.1 to 15.1 g/dL. The range is different for children and pregnant women. If the quantity of hemoglobin  is below normal, a person is said to have anemia.

Anemia causes a lack of iron-carrying hemoglobin in red blood cells which prevents proper transportation of oxygen through the body. There are many forms of anemia, each with its own cause. This blood order can be temporary or long term, and it can range from mild to severe. Being anemic can make a person pale, tired, cold and dizzy. Usually blood tests are carried out to find if a person has anemia. The treatment also depends on the type and severity of the disease.
