How to choose the right low-carb diet

Finding a low-carb diet

Low-carbohydrate diets have gained popularity in recent years. Some focus on weight loss while others focus on peak athletic performance or optimum health and fitness. In both cases, low-carb diets have proven successful, satisfying, and relatively easy to follow.

Instructions
Step 1
Determine your health goal

Do you want to lose weight as quickly as possible? Do you want to improve athletic stamina and performance? Do you want to avoid common allergens? Or do you seek to treat a particular health condition with low-carb nutritional therapy?

Step 2
Survey low-carb diets

Review various low-carb diet programs including The Primal Blueprint, The Paleo Diet, Protein Power, Neanderthin, The Atkins Diet, The South Beach Diet, The Stone Age Diet, and The Zone. Each diet focuses on specific health goals, from weight loss to optimum gene expression to treatment of illness or allergy. Some diets strictly limit carbohydrates while others entail a more informal or intuitive approach.

Step 3
Choose a diet program or lifestyle approach

For the best chance of success, pick the diet that resonates most closely with your habits and inclinations. If you prefer a regimented program, choose a methodical diet plan. If you prefer to take your time and develop a lasting lifestyle change, choose an appropriate approach. You can, of course, create your own program based on the knowledge and experience you gather.

Step 4
Get started

Go shopping. Fill your pantry with low-carb food choices. Whether you will plan meals or free-range, make sure low-carb choices are available. Enjoy your step toward improved health.

Step 5
Make adjustments and settle into a routine

As your body adjusts to a low-carb diet, make adjustments as necessary to find the balance of macronutrients (fats, proteins, and carbs) that suits your energy, muscle building, or weight loss and maintenance needs.
